The LGV theory test has 100 multiple-choice questions. You have 115 minutes (1 hour 55 minutes) to complete them. The pass mark is 85 out of 100. Our mock tests above replicate this exactly — 100 questions, 115-minute timer, and the correct pass threshold.

The multiple-choice pass mark is 85 out of 100. For the hazard perception section (not covered in text-based practice), you must score at least 67 out of 100 from 19 video clips (maximum 5 points each). You must pass both sections in the same sitting.

Under EU Regulation 561/2006: daily maximum 9 hours (extendable to 10 hours no more than twice per week); weekly maximum 56 hours; fortnightly maximum 90 hours. You must take a 45-minute break after no more than 4.5 hours of continuous driving. Daily rest must be at least 11 consecutive hours.

Goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes maximum laden weight are restricted to: 50 mph on single carriageway roads, 60 mph on dual carriageways, and 60 mph on motorways. These limits apply regardless of the national speed limit posted for cars on those roads.

The most heavily tested areas include: tachographs and drivers' hours, vehicle safety and daily checks, loading and vehicle weights, motorway and road rules, hazard awareness, and documents and regulations (operator licences, Driver CPC, Traffic Commissioner). All 15 DVSA categories appear in our 3 mock tests.

There is no limit on the number of attempts. However, you must wait at least 3 clear working days before retaking. Each attempt costs £26. After a failed attempt, DVSA provides a breakdown of which topic areas you underperformed in — use this alongside our topic practice tests to target your revision.

For goods vehicles over 3,500 kg, the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1mm across at least three-quarters of the tread width around the full circumference. This is different from cars (1.6mm). The industry best practice is to replace tyres at 3mm as grip reduces significantly before the legal minimum is reached.

The LGV theory test is the initial qualification you pass to obtain your Category C or C+E licence. Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is an ongoing professional qualification requiring 35 hours of approved training every 5 years. Both are required to drive professionally — you cannot work as a professional LGV driver without a current DQC card.

Study the Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles and the Highway Code. Focus on tachograph rules, vehicle safety checks, loading and weights, motorway rules, and operator licensing. Then work through our topic practice tests on Pages 1 and 2 to test each area, followed by all 3 full mock tests here. Review every wrong answer using the explanations provided.

Book directly at GOV.UK (search "book LGV theory test"). You will need: a provisional Category C or C+E licence entitlement on your driving licence, a payment method (£26), and an email address. You can choose your preferred test centre from the available locations. Allow at least 2-3 weeks lead time as test slots at popular centres can book up quickly.
